Ten years ago, on July 1, 2011, Princess Charlene and Prince Albert celebrated their wedding on the Rock. While the rumors about the couple made the headlines, the former swimmer could not hold back her tears at the exit of the chapel…
This Friday, July 1, Monaco celebrates a singular event. These 1st and 2nd July, Albert II and Charlene of Monaco celebrate their 10 years of marriage. A symbolic date that they will finally be able to honor together. Back from South Africa, Charlene is recovering little by little from a serious “infection of the ENT sphere”, for which she underwent several interventions. This is not the first difficulty that the couple has encountered since the beginning of their relationship. Before their marriage, the couple had to face persistent rumors. At the time, some newspapers claimed that Charlene Wittstock had tried to flee to South Africa to escape her fate. So many hearsay that tainted the D-Day.
Because the former swimmer did not fail to cry during the ceremony. An attitude that many media have commented. As the Guardian reported at the time, Charlene “left the royal chapel (…) with her upper lip wobbling and a tear running down her cheek”. She continued, “As she wiped her tears with a handkerchief, Prince Albert pleaded in a whisper: ‘Don’t cry, don’t cry.'” These words of the Monegasque prince did not fail to appeal. For some, these few words proved the tensions within the couple.
The rumors of leaks, “categorical lies”
However, it would be nothing of the sort. According to Princess Charlene of Monaco, the request of her husband was a simple gesture of affection. Indeed, the former swimmer was very moved the day of his wedding. “Everything was so overwhelming and there were all the emotions mixed up because of the rumors. Obviously the tension built up and I burst into tears,” she told The Times in 2013, calling the rumors “outright lies” at the same time. “And then I broke down in tears again because I was like, ‘Oh no, now the whole world has seen me cry.'” Despite these highly emotional moments, Charlene of Monaco was apparently able to enjoy her nuptials.
“It was such a wonderful three days,” she added. “I look back on it and I still wonder how we managed to get through it. There was so much going on. It was beautiful, it was sentimental, we showed the most intimate moment I’ve ever experienced.” Since her wedding, Princess Charlene has not been idle. Very busy with her Foundation, the mother of James and Gabriella multiplies partnerships and supports the causes that are dear to her, such as the fight against poaching, or the sports education of children.
