Regal Reverence: A Subtle Homage to the Late Queen Elizabeth II in King Charles III

As the new school year draws ever closer, Charles III and Queen Camilla are preparing to mark the first anniversary of their accession to the throne, and consequently of the death of Elizabeth II. But when September comes, discretion will be the order of the day for the sovereigns.

No bugles, no parades. On 8 September, the first anniversary of Elizabeth II’s death, Charles III and Queen Camilla will mark this fateful day in private, report our confrères in Le Parisien, citing information from the BBC. The late sovereign herself celebrated the anniversaries of the death of her father, King George VI, in the greatest privacy. Although commemorative events may be held, Elizabeth II’s eldest son and his wife plan not to attend any of them.

In September 2022, the death of Elizabeth II at the age of 96 plunged the country into ten days of national mourning. During this period, all the royal pomp and circumstance was deployed to commemorate one of the longest reigns in history. From the transportation of the Queen’s remains from Balmoral to London, to the funeral at Westminster Abbey, the eyes of the world were riveted on the United Kingdom as it bid farewell to one of the most influential and beloved sovereigns in history.

A year of reign for king Charles III and Queen Camilla

Although Charles III and Queen Camilla were not crowned until last May, during grandiose celebrations that brought the United Kingdom to life for three days, Elizabeth II’s eldest son and his wife automatically became King and Queen when the late sovereign breathed her last. Since then, the father of Princes William and Harry has had a turbulent first year on the throne. Between the economic and energy crises that have gripped the country and his youngest son’s attacks on the Crown, Queen Camilla’s husband has had little respite. Let’s hope for Charles III’s sake that the years to come will be gentler.
