After Princess of Wales and King Charles III, Another Royal Family Member Struck by Cancer

On December 2nd, a distant member of the British royal family announced online that she had been diagnosed with skin cancer.

Since February 2024, King Charles III has been battling cancer and continues his treatment while scaling back his royal duties. Meanwhile, Kate Middleton is in remission from her breast cancer, which she publicly revealed in March 2024. Within the British royal family, another woman is now fighting this disease.

She is the discreet India Hicks, daughter of Lady Pamela Hicks, who served as lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II. Her mother was also Prince Philip’s first cousin. India Hicks, who is therefore the monarch’s goddaughter, announced on the content creation platform Substack on December 2nd, at age 58, that she had been diagnosed with skin cancer.

Recalling the moment she learned of her condition, she stated candidly: “It wasn’t a dramatic scene, not at all, just terribly worrying.” It was during medical examinations that she discovered this fast-growing tumor located on her lower calf. This “cancerous area was progressing alarmingly,” she explained, describing the emergency Mohs surgery she underwent in Miami. This is a technique that removes cancerous tissue layer by layer to eliminate all cells damaged by the disease. “The procedure itself was relatively unpleasant,” revealed India Hicks, who was nonetheless well cared for by the doctors. “This time, I was lucky,” she confided, grateful to have been able to spend Thanksgiving with her family (she is the proud mother of five children).

A Former Model Who Made Lifestyle Her Business

India Hicks is a businesswoman, interior decorator, and former model who has written several books. In 2021, she married David Flint Wood, whom she has known since childhood and who is the father of her children. She began her career in the United States after studying art history in London. She had the opportunity to walk the runway for several brands, including Emilio Pucci and J. Crew, moving between Paris, Florence, and New York. Since 1996, she has lived in the Bahamas where she decorates luxury homes, creates beauty products, and publishes lifestyle books, as reported by Vanity Fair in September 2021.
